Chapter 1 Exploring Computers (Facts and Theories) History of computers (Different generations) Types of computers (Super, Micro etc…) http://www.cranfield.ac.uk/CCC/Bpark/colossus http://ftp.arl.mil/~mike/comphist/ http://www.cs.yale.edu/homes/tap/past-women.html http://www.islandnet.com/~kpolsson/comphist.htm http://www.computer.org/50/history Conceptual Computer (Von Neumann Architecture)
Chapter 2 Parts of a Personal Computer System (eg. Harddisk, Modem, Serial Port etc etc…) Too many sites to list. The main idea is to have one guy compare which hard disk has what technology, and which hard disk crashes within minutes etc etc… Of course, do not limit yourself to just hard disks. The other guy could do Modem and the other CPU (Wow! This is tough)
Chapter 3 Building a personal computer (PC) http://Granite.ml.org/computer/ http://motherboards.org/build.html
Chapter 4 Some PC Components that you people will be facing CPU Pentium™ 233 with MMX™ http://www.intel.com Motherboard Asus SP97-V (with SIS 5598) http://www.asus.com CD-ROM drive Creative CD2422E http://www.creaf.com Hard disk Quantum Fireball 4.3GB http://www.quantum.com
I would like Yong Lin to organise thru the mailing list which group will be handling which chapter. And preferably, group these people into 4 groups according to your interests and we shall have some constructive discussion on the coming Thursday based on the different chapters. Attached is a form for u guys, and whoever is assigned as the leader of the group, please make sure you have your group members assigned different areas to research. I do not want any of you to spend too much time (less than 2 hours) on it and that is why I want distributed research. The success of the discussion will depend how Yong Lin organise the group leaders and how the group leaders dispatch their duties. The main idea is to let you understand what is distributed processing in human “beans” and at the same time, prepare yourselves (in terms of knowledge) for the two weeks of grueling computer hardware lessons. For those who are really interested, you can even bring along gimmicks which you have (things like a pistol connected to a computer and could be fired thru the network etc etc….) Wow! Am I a bit violent here!
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me thru my email. I want to see how you present your materials on Thursday, ok!
